What You Say in the Court of Social Networking Can and Will Be Held Against You!
By Andrew M Nathan
You had a long day at work, and are looking to connect with some friends on Facebook. It's getting a little late at night, and you might have had a cocktail just a little while earlier to blow off some steam when a friend sends you a request or posts a message on your wall that you do not like. You tell that person where to go with their comments and feel a little bit better about the day you just had and then go to sleep.
Here is the challenge. Your wall, pending privacy rights on Facebook, is visible to all of your friends. That means, since you are connected to your clients and also network partners they might be able to see this little tirade and rethink whether they want to work with you.
Their is a growing debate online about privacy of users who post information on social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn, and even blogs. Most of this information is visible to everyone you know. The problem is will that lead to them knowing too much!
The challenge is that if one prospect sees your posts and does not like it then you could lose them and their referrals. Additionally, what happens if a network partner sees this and decides to stop giving you business. The ramifications of what we say and do not say are huge in today's society. It is the responsibility we must shoulder for the benefits of using social networking sites.
The truth is that each tweet, update, and post could build or cost your business, so take care to construct a persona for yourself that you can live up to everyday. The question therefore is whether you should be judged so harshly for every misstep, because we ourselves should not be judging others for every move they make. Every person in today's society creates a brand of themselves that can be destroyed for the slightest provocation. Is that right?
