Depression and Insomnia - How Are They Related?
By Pat Gustafson

When your night seems to last forever and your days are exhausting, you know there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Not getting the amount of sleep your body needs is bad enough, but when you top it off with mood changes, your level of stress can escalate quicker than ever.

Just as a child who missed a nap, an adult without enough sleep can go through changes within their body. Chemicals that should be released through sleep are not, which can suck out energy and change the person's view of reality. These chemicals are needed to maintain a "normal" level of sanity.

The less sleep you get, the more groggy, irritable, upset, and stressed you may feel. You may start to get the feeling that you are ready for a nap 24/7. This can be upsetting, especially knowing that it is almost impossible to do so. Irritability is closely linked with anger and sometimes sadness, and this can affect your overall mood.

As days go by and you experience being continually tired daily, it can be depressing. Many people feel that they are not being productive, leading them to believe that their lives are less important. Although this is only due to lack of energy and motivation from inadequate sleep, the person experiencing it may feel it is their fault and there is nothing they can do to change it. This is mostly why mood changes are so common in adults that get little sleep.

Sleep is a very important tool to be able to function every day. Without it, depression and possibly mood disorders that you weren't aware of may surface. Knowing that these are related may be the key to how to overcome both aspects of the issue and be able to live like a "normal" adult.
